What banks will let you use a credit card for the opening deposit when you open a savings account? March 9, 2010

I want to open a savings account for about $700 and charge the opening deposit to a credit card. The credit card gets points, which would be good for a gift card if I had about 700 more. I want to close the credit card account, but only after I get enough points, to not waste the points I already have. I’m going to open a savings account anyway, so I figure I might as well get those 700 points from it. In any case, the savings account should pay high interest and should allow transactions between banks online.
For example, Bank of America will let you open a checking account online, and use a credit card to fund it. The credit card transaction will be a purchase, not a cash advance. But I want to know what other banks will do that, and which of them will do it for savings accounts.Submited by:Dilbert

How did the banks recover stolen money from a robbery before the FDIC insured days? March 7, 2010

I remember reading about how the Ashley gang from the 1920s got away with 4,500 dollars and 18,000 in securities.

This, of course, was long before FDIC where which guarantees the safety of deposits in member banks, currently up to $250,000 per depositer.

How did the banks before FDIC recover money in the event of a robbery, like the Ashley gang robbery, or a bank run? Did the bank immediately go under?

I have a bank account at the moment but the interest rate i’m currently on is 0.03% (which is crap) and i was wondering what type of account should i be looking to open and what banks are good to look at? The money will be in this account for at least the next year if not longer and i put through monthly lodgments varying in amounts so i don’t want anything with a fixed amount.

Any help anyone could provide would be much appreciated!

Or, in other words, what value should be given from a credit risk to a net worth of a borrower that consists of unvested stocks and stock options related to the company he’s working for? Should that value be brought back to zero because if for instance the borrower would leave his company, those unvested stock and stock options would remain ownership ofthe company?

Can I maintain a bank loan for a vehicle that is destroyed w/ no insurance? February 13, 2010

Horribly enough, my husband attempted suicide in his truck and the truck burned up and he received horrible burns in the process. If that isn’t enough to deal w/ the police said that if we file an insurance claim for the 1.5 y/o truck that they will prosecute him for arson and insurance fraud. So, I have a loan for 3.5 more years. If we maintain possession of the truck and continue to insure it, can the bank call in the loan if they find out? I changed the insurance to storage insurance only which is legal. I don’t know if I should come clean w/ the bank and try to get them to refinance it as a signature loan, or if I should just keep quiet. I don’t have the $24,000 that is owed on it, and don’t have that much equity in my home. I have 2 kids, and can not lose my house. Does anybody have any knowledge on where I stand w/ the bank? We have a very good relationship w/ our bank and we hate to lose it and not have them help us in the future. So don’t want to screw them over.Submited by:Trouble
