How do I get an auto finance company to stop calling me? May 9, 2010

A former friend took out a car loan and wasn’t making payments. Without my knowledge, he listed my name as a credit reference with my phone number. I haven’t seen this guy in over a year and they are calling me everyday asking about the car or money. I don’t have any knowledge of his whereabouts. Isn’t there anything I can do to make it so they can stop calling me besides telling them to stop(which I already have) They never called me to confirm whether he is a credit risk or not, but we already weren’t friends, so I would have said I can’t vouch for him. Any help would be appreciated

Give them the name and phone number of your lawyer . Tell them he will answer any questions they have in this matter .
Unless you signed some document stating you as the co-signer guarantee on the note, you own them nothing. It seems very strange that a finance company would accept someones name and phone as a credit reference. However, a credit reference implies that you are someone to call for – simply put – a reference and does not guarantee anything.
Tell the finance company you do not know where your former friend is and that you do not and are not bound by anything he may have done. If they persist, contact your local law enforcement and see what they might suggest or something they might can do. There are laws regarding harassment. But before you call any law, be absolutely sure you did not sign anything.
I think You might have to let them know your friend put you on the account without you knowing about it. As long as you did not sign anything you are not obligated for any payments. If they keep harassing you, let them know you are going to speak to an attorney about this matter being you have nothing to do with someone putting you down as a reference. If all else fails, call an attorney and see if you have a case to file suite. Maybe, if they keep bothering you, you might be able to get something in return for being harassed.
Tell them if they call again you will report them to the police for harrassment!
