I am in college and a server, but I need to change jobs for my schedule. I know banks ask for credit reports. Up until around 3 years ago my credit wasn’t very good. I didn’t know if that would disqualify me or not. I was just wonder what specifics they would be looking for.

Things like debts is a big factor!

They do a criminal check.

They won’t check your credit history.

Getting hired as a teller is easy. They may only require one reference.

My guess is that they would check to see how long you have remind at any residence, and do you have any pending judgments against you.

You said that up to around 3 years ago, so I would assume that since then your credit has been good.

Good luck in your job hunting

Two of my girlfriends were able to get jobs as bank tellers at 18. Neither of them had much of a credit history and no experience in the field. One of these girls only had experience in the food industry, so you should be fine in that area!

As far as your credit history, if it’s improved over the last 3 years, you should be okay, I doubt they look that hard. And if many banks are willing to hire 18 year olds, credit history must not be a huge issue. But it all depends on the bank!

I would imagine that they look for honesty, good neat presentation, people skills because you will be dealing with customers, numeracy. Your credit rating might affect it as it relates to your ability to manage money, and if you are seriously in debt they might consider that being around large amounts of cash could be too much of a temptation for you.

But if your credit problems are all in the past and now you have sorted yourself out, I would expect that would reflect favourably on you – you obviously learned money-management skills along the way! I’m not sure they can check your credit history that far back anyway – wouldn’t it be an invasion of privacy?

Good luck job hunting!
