As far as I know, there is no law requiring you to have to submit to a credit check in order to get housing. However, most landlords will ask prospective tenants to submit to one as a prerequisite to renting.
Your best chances for not having to submit to a credit check are to go with a mom-and-pop rental, such as a duplex which is owned and managed by the same people. Because such landlords are often less savvy than big apartment complex leasing offices or institutional management companies, you have a much better chance to get away without a credit check. Also, such landlords tend to care more about personality and their impression of you than your credit score. At least, that’s been my experience.
Usually only in the ghetto areas. Look near the homeless shelters, they usually have places that you pay every week (quicker to evict) and they are less likely to care about credit or criminal history.
