How long does a closed bank account take to report to ChexSystems? March 9, 2010

Due to a job loss I got in a desperate situation and took advantage of my bank’s courtesy overdraft protection..it overdrew the account big-time and I was not able to pay all of it back in time. The bank closed and charged off my account. This bank uses ChexSystems, so how long does it take the bank to report the account?

Sorry, multiple part question: What is the highest credit score possible and what is the lowest possible? What can you do to improve it? And the myth that using your ATM Debit card as credit can actually improve your credit score, is it true?
What banks will let you use a credit card for the opening deposit when you open a savings account? March 9, 2010
Posted by Banking in : Personal Finance , 2commentsI want to open a savings account for about $700 and charge the opening deposit to a credit card. The credit card gets points, which would be good for a gift card if I had about 700 more. I want to close the credit card account, but only after I get enough points, to not waste the points I already have. I’m going to open a savings account anyway, so I figure I might as well get those 700 points from it. In any case, the savings account should pay high interest and should allow transactions between banks online.
For example, Bank of America will let you open a checking account online, and use a credit card to fund it. The credit card transaction will be a purchase, not a cash advance. But I want to know what other banks will do that, and which of them will do it for savings accounts.Submited by:Dilbert

Closing a credit card account that is inactive? How much will it affect my credit report? March 8, 2010
Posted by Banking in : Credit , 2commentsI’ve had this account for about two years, and I haven’t used it in a long time, and I’m thinking of closing it but I don’t know how it would affect my credit report. This is a secure credit card, with only a $300 limit. I have two other credit cards that I use a lot more often and I’ve been very responsible about paying bills on time.Submited by:jenahfah
What is the best credit card to apply for for the first time? March 8, 2010

I have years of excellent on-time rental history, however I have no credit because I’ve never been in debt (always pay bills on time) go figure. I was wondering which credit cards I could apply for, for the first time. Wal-Mart Credit card rejected me because I have no credit, and I’m just looking for something small so I can put things on the card and pay them off quickly to establish some sort of credit. Any suggestions?

How did the banks recover stolen money from a robbery before the FDIC insured days? March 7, 2010
Posted by Banking in : Personal Finance , 1 comment so farI remember reading about how the Ashley gang from the 1920s got away with 4,500 dollars and 18,000 in securities.
This, of course, was long before FDIC where which guarantees the safety of deposits in member banks, currently up to $250,000 per depositer.
How did the banks before FDIC recover money in the event of a robbery, like the Ashley gang robbery, or a bank run? Did the bank immediately go under?
